How to Choose a Nail Shape for Natural Nails

Shape changes the whole look of a manicure, but you do not need to memorize nail terminology. Start with the shape your natural nail can support and how you use your hands.

Round

Round nails follow the curve of the fingertip and work especially well on shorter natural nails.

They can feel simple and practical while still looking polished with color or a thin French tip.

Squoval

Squoval combines a flatter top with softened corners. It gives some of the clean look of a square nail without the same sharp corners.

It is a useful everyday shape for clients who want a neat, balanced finish.

Square

Square nails create straight sidewalls and a flat tip. The look is crisp, but the corners can catch more easily depending on your routine.

If your natural nails tend to split at the sides, tell your nail technician before forcing a very sharp square shape.

Almond

Almond narrows toward a rounded point and can make the fingers look longer. It usually needs enough free edge to create the taper cleanly.

A soft almond is less extreme and can be easier to wear than a very pointed version.

Bring the shape and length together

A shape that looks good at one length may not translate perfectly to another. Show the inspiration, then adapt it to the natural nail you actually have.
